ACCUPLACER ESL

The Accuplacer ESL is a computer-based test that helps determine the best English courses for students who are learning English. Your test results will help place you in the right level so you can get the support you need to do well in your classes.

  • What’s on the ESL test?
  • Can I appeal the ESL test?
  • How do I schedule my ESL test?
  • Do other tests work?

What’s on the ESL test?

The Accuplacer ESL test has five sections. Here’s what to expect:

  • WritePlacer ESL (Essay Writing) – You'll have 60 minutes to write an essay (at least 300 words) based on a short statement and question. Your response should clearly express your opinion and include reasons and examples to support it.
  • Reading Skills – This untimed section has 20 multiple-choice questions based on short reading passages. You’ll answer questions about the passage’s meaning and details.
  • Language Use – In this untimed section, you’ll answer 20 multiple-choice questions that test grammar and sentence structure. You’ll fill in blanks with the correct word or phrase and combine sentences effectively.
  • Listening – This untimed section has 20 multiple-choice questions where you’ll listen to conversations on different topics and answer questions about them.
  • Sentence Meaning – In this untimed section, you’ll answer 20 multiple-choice questions that test your understanding of sentence structure and meaning.

Scoring & Placement

  • A composite score of 105 or higher means you meet CUNY’s English proficiency requirements and can enroll in a college-level English course.
  • A score below 105 means you’ll be placed in an ESL course that matches your skill level.
Prepare for the ESL test

Can I appeal the ESL test?

Students cannot appeal their Accuplacer ESL test results.  However, students may speak to the ESL Coordinator if you believe the course placement is incorrect.

How do I schedule my ESL test?

Once you accept your college admission offer, you will get an email about the Accuplacer ESL test. The email will include your test appointment or instructions on how to schedule one. You need to bring a valid photo ID, and you cannot use electronic devices or a dictionary during the test.

Do other tests work?

The TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, Duolingo, and other similar exams are used for admissions purposes only, and cannot be used to satisfy proficiency requirements in English.  ESL applicants who do not meet CUNY’s English proficiency requirements will be assessed via the Accuplacer ESL to determine appropriate ESL or English course placement.
